Ever wonder how your logo is designed? Most likely it will be drawn in an application called Adobe Illustrator. This program is the industry standard for digital design and illustration. It began as an application for just the Macintosh computer and quickly became beloved amongst artists. Illustrator draws images on a screen mathematically rather than just putting pixels on the screen like Adobe Photoshop. With Illustrator, when you draw a circle, for instance, the circle is a fully-editable object that can be reshaped and re-colored on the fly.
It took 4 seconds to draw the green circle below. It took that same amount of time to change the size and color in each subsequent circle. This ability to to redraw with such speed and ease is a dream come true for artists.

The other main advantage is the reusability of objects. When an object is drawn, it can easily be duplicated in a split second. The first object in the graphic below was drawn and each subsequent object was duplicated in just one second. This capability can save a tremendous amount of time when designing a logo that has objects that need to be reused in the design.

Below is a screen shot showing a design in Artwork/Wireframe view in Illustrator. The circles are bubbles that are obviously used throughout the design. If this were a traditional painting done the with a canvas and paintbrush, each bubble would have to be drawn over and over again. With Illustrator, the objects can be copied and resized instantly, thereby saving countess hours of having to manually draw each bubble.

Below you see the graphic in Normal view in Illustrator and can now see the colored bubbles throughout the design. \

Do all artists use Adobe Illustrator for logo design? A majority do, but it is not the only application that can be used. There are other vector-based application like CorelDraw and Xara that can also be used, but Illustrator is the market leader in this field. We would definitely recommend having your logo drawn in one of these applications. If any edits and/or color changes have to be make to the design, it is 20 times easier to do this in Illustrator rather than Photoshop.
