Looking Back on 1970s Corporate Identity

The decade that gave us bell-bottoms and smiley faces also gave us a distinctive logo design style that has (thankfully) all but disappeared. It started appearing in the early 1970s and became wildly popular throughout the decade. I don't think that there is a specific name for this design technique, but it is visually very easy to identify: basically it's an abstract juxtaposition of the initials of the company name.  The design at bottom left (SKG) is a classic representation of this design technique. I can't think of any major American corporation that is using this design style.

If you happened to catch "Tales of the City" on PBS, Mary Ann Singleton worked at a company that had a this 70s-style logo. Corporate artwork can be a lot like fashion: You may have looked great in a "Member's Only" jacket in 1981, but you wouldn't be caught dead in one a few years later. A logo is something that you are are most likely going to keep for a while...what is trendy now might be passé in a few years. Don't be stuck with the artistic equivalent of mutton chops!
